☯ What makes us whole?
The ultimate goal of holistic healing is wholeness. In achieving wholeness, we must consider all aspects of our lives including:
☯ Respecting our body
☯ Healing our relationships
☯ Caring for our environment
☯ Showing love for all humankind
☯ Living our life purpose
So what is holistic healing? The Basics – What is health?
The state of ‘health’ implies that all natural processes that support life are functioning at an optimal level in their intended alignment.
There are three general types of ‘health’ – physical health, mental health and spiritual health. We usually treat each one separately as though they are not related…for instance, we might see a psychologist for mental health, a doctor for our physical health and a healer for our spiritual health.
But is it really possible to separate physical health from mental health from spiritual health? Can we maintain our physical health in the absence of mental health?
At any given time, we each sit somewhere along the spectrum of physical, mental and spiritual health…
☯ The Four Elements of Health Don’t they all mean the same thing?
It is only when we view ourselves from a holistic perspective that we realize that health is really an overall state of being.
We are either in balance or out of balance, aligned or misaligned, integrated or disintegrated, and that’s what makes us feel well or unwell. Too simple to be true? Maybe not…
The body, mind and soul work as a system with each part contributing equally to whole person. When in flow, this system facilitates the natural flow of energy throughout the body, without blockages or resistance. When out of flow, this natural flow is interrupted as energy accumulates and stagnation of energy occurs.
The Defintion – What is holistic healing? Let’s answer the question, ‘what exactly is healing?’
Healing is about bringing any imbalance into alignment with its natural state of functioning.
Every organ in our bodies has a natural or ‘healthy’ state of functioning as do our emotional, mental and spiritual states. When we are out of balance, we feel like something is out of place – whether it comes in the form of emotional or physical pain or discomfort – and we naturally want to return to our natural state of harmony, when everything ‘works’ as intended. This process of re-balancing is synonymous with healing.
Holistic healing bypasses the ‘band-aid fix’ approach of conventional medicine, looks beyond a person’s physical state and sees the holistic view of their state of being or functioning. It acknowledges that the root cause of a physical illness may in fact be non-physical.
Holistic healing works when we we approach life from all aspects of being – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual…
☯ The Holistic Healing Approach
Therefore, a holistic approach is considered to be more effective because change occurs on all levels and as a result, positive changes are more likely to last long-term and improve a person’s overall quality of life.
When we heal holistically, we address imbalances on all levels, rather than one or two, and so it becomes a life-long process in achieving overall life balance. The ultimate goal of aligning the body, mind and soul promises a happier, healthier, more balanced state of being.
☯ Why does holistic healing work?
As we go about our day, so much more is occurring within and around us than we realise. Whether we are conscious of it or not, life situations cause us to respond physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, all at the same time.
Whereas, conventional Western medicine views the body as being a separate functioning mechanism to the rest of our being, the holistic healing approach sees the body as a reflection of the whole person; so we go from being ‘me and my body’ (2 separate entities) to ‘I am my body’ (1 entity). There is no separation.
In order to understand how holistic healing works, we must realise that there are many physical and non-physical factors that contribute to our overall health. Take a look at these life factors that influence our health and aging:
☯ Factors That Increase or Decrease Health
The Four Levels of Being – What makes us feel healthy?
In holistic healing, we talk about the four levels, bodies or planes of being: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Our bodies radiate these four levels of being in the form of energy.
These levels reflect the different aspects of ourselves that operate interdependently; when one level is affected, one or more other levels are also affected. For example, when a change occurs on an emotional level, a reaction occurs on the physical level and visa versa.
This is why in holistic medicine, the state of our emotional body is known to positively or negatively influence our physical health. This chain reaction effect is how holistic healing works.
☯ Alignment versus Misalignment – How do I get out of alignment?
When we encounter life situations – events, people, places – they challenge us on at least one of these levels, physical, emotional, mental and/or spiritual. For example:
On an emotional level…When we handle life well, we confront these challenges, learn from them and move on. When we don’t handle life so well, we resist these challenges and they become subconscious blockages.
On a physical level…When we input natural, health-giving enzymes and nutrients into our bodies, they respond with strength and vitality. When we intake toxins and chemicals directly or indirectly, our bodies become dysfunctional and weak.
Over time, each small thing that the body, mind or soul resists accumulates and we get further and further from our natural state of alignment. This is why…
When all four levels are in alignment, we are happy and healthy. When there is a blockage on one or more levels, we become out of alignment and in time we become unhappy and unhealthy. The discomfort of being out of alignment acts as an impetus to change.
☯ How Holistic Healing Works – How do I get back into alignment?
Holistic healing has two goals:
***To balance each level; and
***To balance all levels with each other.
The first goal is where we focus our efforts simply because the second happens naturally when all levels are individually balanced. In the absence of resistance, imbalance on any level will naturally seek and return to balance. Once all levels are balanced, wholeness is achieved:
☯ The Everlasting Process of Healing
The approach that is used to achieve alignment in holistic healing is purification – purification on all levels of being. A pure state of being means that energy flows freely through all systems without blockages or resistance. With time, we become more refined filters of energy, more sensitive to imbalances and more able to correct them at will.
In practice, a balanced lifestyle is what we are aiming for. Most of us tend to live with at least one level out of balance at any given time.
Sometimes we’re worse off and out of balance on all levels while at other times, we are functioning at our best in total alignment. Where are you on the road to a holistic, balanced lifestyle?
